Dermal fillers are a popular non-surgical procedure to improve fine lines and wrinkles and provide volume to different areas of the face. At Robertson Wellness and Aesthetics, we use hyaluronic acid fillers. These substances are naturally present in the body to encourage collagen production—the treatment results in increased volume and enhanced contours.
How do Dermal Fillers Work?
Hyaluronic acid is a popular ingredient in most skincare products, but dermal fillers place the substance where it is needed most. As we age, the loss of facial contours is due to the decline in collagen production. Hyaluronic acid stimulates collagen growth, resulting in the diminishing of fine lines, enhancement of the lips, and plump cheeks.
Advanced dermal fillers use different versions of hyaluronic acid to treat different areas such as:
- Hallow cheeks
- Nasolabial folds
- Lines around the mouth
- Lips
- Chin
- Lines and wrinkles
- Scars
Your Robertson Wellness and Aesthetics specialists will chooses the filler best suited for your procedure. Ask during consultation about all of your areas of concern to ensure the best results.
What is a Dermal Filler Appointment Like?
Appointments last from 15 to 60 minutes, depending on the treatment area and the dermal filler used. There will be an injection to the treatment area with thin needles. You will feel a pinch like any other injection. Some fillers have lidocaine which numbs the area being injected. Once the treatment is complete, you may return to your regularly scheduled activities.
What are the Results of Dermal Fillers?
Results are apparent immediately following the procedure. You will be able to notice an increased amount of volume and definition in the area as soon as the treatment is over. Your results will continue to improve in the following weeks as hyaluronic acid stimulates collagen production. Different areas of treatment have other effects.
Cheek enhancement results in more lifted and rounded cheeks. Treatment around the mouth decreases fine lines and shows younger-looking contours. Lip enhancements result in plumper, softer lips without an overexaggerated effect.
On average, dermal fillers last between six months to one year. Because of the different formulas, they break down in the body at different rates. Some may last up to two years. You may find that some dermal fillers last longer for you than others, but each person’s experience is different.
What Do I Do After My Dermal Filler Appointment?
There is no downtime required for dermal fillers. Swelling and redness are expected after the procedure, and some people see some minor bruising. These symptoms should resolve in a few days. To alleviate the symptoms, we recommend topical icing and light massaging. We do not recommend applying heavy makeup or any physical activity for a few hours following the procedure.
We also recommend avoiding placing prolonged pressure on the filler for the first several days, which may necessitate sleeping on your back, rather than on your stomach. This is to avoid displacing the filler.
