How Long Does Botox® Last?

Among the most popular cosmetic products in the world, Botox® gets rid of lines and wrinkles by smoothing the underlying muscle and letting the skin relax. Many people use Botox® as part of their regular maintenance routine to keep themselves looking more youthful and wrinkle-free.

What is Botox®?

Many of the deepest lines and wrinkles on our faces come from facial expressions like smiling and frowning. For example, when we frown, muscles pull the forehead into furrows and pull the skin between the eyebrows into a series of deep vertical lines. Smaller lines and wrinkles respond to other treatments, but for these deep expression lines, Botox® often remains the treatment of choice.

How Does Botox® Work?

Botox® contains botulinum A toxin, a chemical that interferes with the communication between nerve cells and muscles. As a result of this interference, the nerves send a signal for the muscle cell to contract, but the muscle cell does not get the signal and remains relaxed. Without muscle tension keeping the skin pulled into those furrows and frown lines, the skin smooths out, and the wrinkles soften and disappear

While Botox® and its relatives often receive the label “neurotoxins,” they are not actually toxic to the nerve or muscle cells. Once Botox® wears off and no longer interferes with the signal, the nerves and muscles will go back to communicating just as they did before.

What is Botox® Like?

Most people receive between three and five injections of Botox® during treatment, depending on how many areas need treatment. Precise placement of the injections keeps the Botox® from interfering with any muscles except those targeted for treatment. You may feel a slight pinch from the injections. The entire procedure only takes about ten minutes, making this a perfect “lunch break” procedure.

How Long Does Botox® Last?

You will start to see results of your Botox® treatment after three or four days, with full results visible by ten days. You can expect these results to last three to four months. If you allow the Botox® to fade, your wrinkles will return to their pre-treatment state. Many people choose Botox® as a maintenance treatment and have it refreshed every few months.

Is There Any Downtime With Botox®?

You can return to all your regular activities immediately after your Botox® treatment. You may see a small amount of bruising or redness, but this will fade quickly. You should not rub the treated area for a few hours to make sure the injected Botox® stays where it belongs.

Am I a Good Candidate for Botox®?

Most people are good candidates for Botox®. With many medical uses, including the treatment of excessive sweating and chronic migraines, it has a long history of safety and effectiveness.
